Relocating the battery to the trunk.

This page will give you all the steps needed to take to relocate your battery to the trunk. Whether you need more room for intercooler plumbing, or just want to clean up your engine bay a little, you will learn how to do it here.

Items needed: Battery tray or battery box (both can be found at any auto parts store), about 20' of 2 or 4 gauge wire, 6' of 2 or 4 gauge wire (for ground), O ring connectors, battery terminals, drill and drill bits, nuts and bolts, misc. sockets or wrenches.

This battery relocation was done on a 1992 Sentra SE-R. The car will soon be turbo, and it needs more room in the engine bay, so the battery was relocated to the trunk for some added engine compartment space.

Step 1: Decide what side of the trunk you want to put the battery on. For The B13 Sentras, we recommend you place the battery on the driver side of the trunk, there is an opening there which is just perfect for the battery.

Step 2: Start removing the battery terminals from the battery, then remove the battery. Next take out the factory battery tray.

Step 3: Put an O ring connector on one side of the 20' wire, and connect it to the existing terminal. Next wrap up the positive side with electrical tape to make sure it does not ground out to the frame of the car. Take the other end of the wire and run it through the firewall. Usually you can run a lot of wires through the same hole that the speedo cable comes out of. Decide what side of the car you want to run the wire on, and run it all the way to the trunk. Take the other shorter ground wire, put an O ring connector on it, and ground it to the chassis of the car. A good grounding spot would be one of the bolts for the rear strut.

Step 4: Now that you have both wires in the trunk. You need to mount the battery tray. Find some spots to drill through the trunk floor, but careful not to end up drilling into the frame. Once you have some holes, lay down the battery tray, and secure it with some nuts and bolts.

Step 5: Place the battery on the tray, and you can use your stock battery tie down strap to hold it in place. Next run the wires into the terminals, and screw them down, and finally, connect both terminals to the battery.
